Ribeira

Why Visit: This medieval quarter along the Douro is where Porto’s soul lives – between washing lines and azulejos you’ll find real life.
UNESCO-protected houses have leaned into each other since the 14th century, painted yellow, orange and ochre. Your audio guide Porto threads you through alleys scented with grilled sardines from dozens of tascas. Praça da Ribeira had a pillory until 1821 – today it’s vinho verde and river views.

Ponte Dom Luís I

Ever Wondered: why everyone credits Eiffel when his student Théophile Seyrig actually built it (1886)?
The upper deck (60 m) is for metro and pedestrians; the lower deck takes cars. A walking tour Porto often starts here for sweeping views of both banks. Don’t jump when the metro rattles past en route to Vila Nova de Gaia’s port cellars.

Sé do Porto

The Story Behind: This 12th-century cathedral-fortress defended Porto from Moorish attacks – hence the castle look.
In 1809 Napoleon’s troops stabled horses in the cloister. The Gothic rose window ranks among Portugal’s finest. This self guided tour Porto shows the 14th-century azulejo-lined cloister and a terrace with free city views after a steep climb.

Livraria Lello

Local Secret: J.K. Rowling lived in Porto when she started Harry Potter and visited this 1906 bookshop.
A neo-Gothic facade, an art-nouveau interior and that famous red staircase. Entry is €5 (deductible with a purchase) to cap visitors at ~1,000/day. Locals buy books elsewhere – Instagram loves it. The glass dome filters light like a cathedral.

Clérigos Tower

What You’ll Find: Porto’s loftiest viewpoint after 225 steps to 75 m; the 1763 baroque tower guided sailors for centuries.
Nicolau Nasoni designed Italian baroque in granite. Church free; tower about €6. Lit at night, climbed by day; bells chime every quarter hour.

Palácio da Bolsa

Back in 1842: The merchants built this palace to impress investors – the Arabian Hall took 18 years to complete.
A 300-kg chandelier shipped from Venice, 20 kg of gold leaf inspired by the Alhambra, and state dinners (including Queen Elizabeth II). Today it hosts concerts with pristine acoustics.
