History
Rotterdam owes its name to a dam in the river ‘Rotte’ and still has the largest and most important port in Europe. Moreover, Rotterdam features unique and modern architecture, as most of the city had to be rebuilt. This is because the city was bombed during World War II. This destroyed almost the entire historic centre of Rotterdam although some buildings like the City Hall and the Schieland House were spared.
Rotterdam monuments
The municipality of Rotterdam has more than 1,000 national and municipal monuments. For example, the Van Nelle Factory has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2014. Another striking structure is the Market Hall with its domed shape. The Erasmus Bridge, the White House, the new, modern Central Station and the Cube Houses are also sights not to be missed.

At the Maritime Museum you will find more than half a million maritime objects and at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen you can admire more than 150,000 art objects. At Kunsthal Rotterdam, you can also get a taste of the culture, from an authentic painter to everyday fashion.
Fashion city
Rotterdam is a true fashion city and shopaholics will have a great time here. Beurstraverse, better known as the 'Koopgoot', is a very popular shopping street with large and popular brands. Are you more into retro clothing? Rotterdam has that too. At Nieuwemarkt & Pannekoekstraat you will find many unique designer shops.
