Things to do in Nijmegen
There is a lot to see and do in this diverse city. To get a good impression of Nijmegen and not miss a thing, a walking route by City App Tour is an excellent idea.
History
Over 2000 years ago, Nijmegen was founded by the Romans and the city remained under Roman rule for approximately four centuries. Then in World War II, the city centre was severely damaged due to bombing. Not much later, the Battle of Nijmegen (or Liberation of Nijmegen) took place. As Nijmegen has an important and special history, many remains can also be found in the city.
Nijmegen Four Days Marches
The Nijmegen Four-Day Walk is the largest multi-day walking event in the world and dates back more than 120 years. Around 45,000 participants with some 70 different nationalities come here every year, all vying for the four-day pin. Distances vary from 30, 40 to 50 kilometres and the event lasts four days.
Sights
Besides the Stevenskerk and the Waalbrug, there are numerous must-see sights in Nijmegen. The Kronenburgerpark, for example, is often high on the list. This park is excellent for a relaxing walk in green surroundings. On the Grote Markt, Nijmegen's largest square, you will also find the Boterwaag, built in Renaissance style. The town hall is also close to the Grote Markt, where you will find a collection of historical and modern works of art.
Museums in Nijmegen
Nijmegen also has a number of special and interesting museums. A popular museum is De Bastei. Here the history of the river Waal is told, and you can find fossils of million years old. Another well-known museum is Museum het Valkhof, where you can learn all about Roman rule in Nijmegen. The Afrika Museum and the MuZIEum are also very interesting museums in Nijmegen.
Shopping in Nijmegen
Nijmegen is a suitable place for shopping. Here you will find the oldest shopping street in the Netherlands: the Lange Hezelstraat. The wonderful thing about this street is that you will recognise different building styles throughout the centuries. This is because certain buildings remained standing after the bombardment. Here you will find well-known brands as well as craft shops and specialist shops. You will also find hotels, entertainment venues and various restaurants en bars.
The bottom line is that Nijmegen is a historical city with an interesting past. The city has something for everyone and lends itself perfectly to an app-guided audio tour with our virtual audio guide.
